Colour, Colour everywhere!

After completing week 3 of ABSPD, I can confidently say that colour really is everywhere!

This has been a very busy but inspiring week, with me trying to juggle freelance projects and bespoke work with the online course but I think I’ve just about managed it – still a couple of exercises to catch up on but I’ll get there!

But what an inspiring week all about colour. I’ve certainly found myself looking around with new pattern filled colour eyes – we were warned that this might happen! I literally cannot go anywhere without taking photos of something…

We were encouraged to take a look at our surroundings for colour palette inspiration; looking at the décor in our homes, the clothes in our wardrobes, books we have, stationery collections we might be hoarding, holiday snaps we’ve taken and even random coloured objects from around the house to see what colours we surround ourselves with.

After an initial search of my house, I discovered that our décor is pretty plain and “beige” so to speak, meaning a severe lack of bright patterns or colours to take inspiration from! But a rummage through my plain wardrobe (I am known to my friends as “Mrs. Beige”!), revealed a few pieces of vibrant clothing which I have been known to wear on special occasions!! I took a few snapshots and with the help of my computer, began to identify the colour palettes that occurred within each item, as well as jotting down a few words about why I liked each one. I also managed to create some other lovely palettes from a selection of holiday photos and created my own original colour palette from a collection of 3D objects. The resulting palettes were actually quite surprising…not so beige after all!

Whilst my home and wardrobe are pretty safe and neutral in terms of colours, I find myself drawn to a wide variety of colours when looking at pattern. Coral tones with a pop of vibrant green, orange or turquoise is one of my favourite combinations at the moment, followed by teals with yellow and grey and also bright, vibrant and fun colour palettes. With this in mind, we were encouraged to create a colour love moodboard to help us focus on what we are drawn to, using anything we could find that contained our chosen colours This could either be done using magazine tears, and papers in a collage/layered style or created digitally on the computer. Due to lack of time this week, I am yet to create my own collage or digital moodboard of my favourite images and colour but I do use Pinterest a lot to collate inspiring imagery of colours and patterns I like which I constantly refer back to, so here are a few screen shots of some of my colour mood boards on Pinterest…

Absolutely love Coral at the moment, especially when it has a pop of green, orange or turquoise with it.

Teal is another favourite colour of mine - it always make me feel calm and relaxed and I love the combinations on this board, with highlights of yellow or orange. They really give the imagery a boost and bring them to life. Lovely

With next week starting to focus on pattern, I’ve no doubt that all of the colour exercises completed throughout the course of last week will prove to be very useful. I can’t wait to get going this week…

Finally, on the subject matter of patterns, I also managed to venture out to the shops this week and was delighted to see that the new Candy Rose collection I’ve designed for Dunelm is available online and in stores nationwide for Spring/Summer 2014. It was so exciting to see all the different products in store and gave me a real buzz! I can’t wait to see more of this in the future, hopefully under my own brand name of Claire Wilson Designs…watch this space!!
